The joy of movement has always been Troy Williamson's raison d'être. From the performance stage and the shop floor to the backrooms of the design studio and the myriad tales behind every swatch of fabric, the professional pursuits of our dancer/choreographer-cum-fashion designer/stylist have served as the puzzle pieces of this mosaic portrait of a man.
Born on the rollicking island of Jamaica in the breezy West Indies, a young Williamson grew up under the nurturing eyes and guiding hands of his seamstress mother and his adoptive Union Jack. After a tight embrace with the world of the dance where he made rhythmic connections through such small-screen vehicles as The X-Factor and MTV as well as provided complementary back-up to recording superstar Beyoncé's most signature shimmies, our lithe Londoner heeded the call to adventure across the Pond then to sunny Jamaica, Home.
Bolstered with the acquired tools to chart the next course, Williamson brought a lifetime of island-hopping full circle when our multihyphenate returned to the irrepressible roots of his creative birthright. Back on the Rock, and keen to make a name for himself, our now style auteur threaded cherished ties to his heritage into founding a co-ed lifestyle brand, anointed Tribe Nine Studios, which boasts Beenie Man, Koffee, Masego, Alxndr London, Chronixx, Lila Ike, and Jesse Royal as fans.
This is all while styling for some of the biggest commercial brand like Digicel, Grace, NCB and Scotibank. Artist like Koffee, Masego, Jesse Royal and sports personality Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, Elaine Thompson-Herah, Jermaine Lowe and Hansel Parchment.
“Everything I do is a physical representation of my life. My inner dialogues. Each piece i style or design is influenced by somewhere I’ve lived or a place to which I have an ancestral connection,” says Williamson.
He affirms, “There’s kinship in these seams”.
